The ritual hand bell or dhanta represents the feminine principle of the ' Protection of wisdom', which directly realized emptiness. When the bell rung it is said to proclaim the sound of emptiness. The dorjie or vajra symbolized the impenetrable, imperishable, indivisible and indestructible state of absolute reality. Together they symbolize the perfect union of wisdom or emptiness (bell) and method of skilful means (dorjie), with the bell representing emptiness and the dorjie form.
