Mongolian bows and arrows

History

Mongolian horn bow was the most advanced technology in its time of the 13th century when Chinggis Khaan created with his horseback army the biggest empire in the human history.

The core technology for making the Mongolian bow was the technique of mixing different materials to get an extraordinary strength. The core of the bow handle was made from Yangir’s (wild goat) horn and several layers of fiber from the bull muscle sinew were applied by glue on top of the horn. The glue was made by boiling fish skin for a long time. This combination of horn and muscle sinew makes the bow handle more strong and flexible. The outside skin of the bow was made from bark of a birch tree and painted for decorations.

The arrow was made from the elm tree’s wood and had a horn or metal head and bird’s feather wings.

The string consisted from 3 parts: the main part and 2 loops at the end of the main part. The main part of the string was made from the sinew fiber cord. The loops were made from an animal skin thong, mainly the skin from dead camels who did not survive the harsh spring hunger.

Making of arrows and bows

Our makers follow an ancient technology for producing arrows and bows.

Yangir horns lost in the mountains are collected each spring. Animal materials are obtained from nomadic families. The bark of birch trees is used for the handle’s skin and is painted by a regular paint. The arrows are made from elm trees and equipped with a horn head and feather wings. Big bird’s, such as eagles, feathers lost in the steppes are collected and used for this purpose.

Only the main part of the string’s core is not of natural origin and is made from a regular fishing line and is wrapped by knitting with a cotton thread.

Such bows are used by professional sportsmen in national competitions such as the archery of the Naadam Festival.

The strength of the bow is measured by kgs. An adult bow has about 25 – 30 kgs of strength and a child bow – 15 kgs.

The length of bow’s handle is approximately 150 cms for an adult bow and 120cms for a child bow.

The arrow’s total length is appr. 85 cms for an adult bow and 70 cms for a child bow.

Care and handling for bows and arrows

Storage:

Bows are stored laid with loose strings as shown on the photo. It is placed on 2 points inside a room without exposure to direct sunlight. During storage, bows need frequent and regular practicing.

Assembling and disassembling bow strings:

It needs 2 persons to assemble and disassemble the bow.

Assembling a bow

- Sit on the chair and position the bow on your knees and have the assisting person hold the loops of the bow’s string to prepare them ready for putting in the notch;

- Hold the bow by the two ends with both hands and push with your knee on the inside of the two curved-in parts of the bow;

- While continuing to push with your knee, pull the bow in with both hands 10 times to loosen the bow;

- While continuing to push with your knee, pull the bow in with both hands following the bow’s curve until the loops of the string get into the notch;

- Let the assisting person put the loops of the string into the notch;

- Your bow is now ready for shooting.

Disassembling a bow

- Pull and lessen the strings of the bow several times as if shooting the bow

- Sit on the chair and position the bow on your knees, hold the bow by the two ends with both hands and push with your knee on the inside of the two curved-in parts of the bow

- While continuing to push with your knee, pull the bow in with both hands until the string’s loops come out from the notch;

- While pulling, let the assisting person remove the strings.

Practicing bows

During storage, a bow needs practicing as often as possible, at least once per month.

To practice a bow, assemble the bow as described above and work it as if shooting but without arrows. Imitate shooting it at least 10 times per session.

Morin Khuur

The history of Morin Huur goes back to an ancient legend about a handsome Mongolian man Hohoo Namjil. Hohoo Namjil was a very good looking young man, who returned to his motherland after the military service and fall in love in a beautiful girl. He had also a dearly loved flying horse. One night, a jealous woman had the horse’s wings cut off and the horse died. The next morning, Hohoo Namjil found his horse dead. In memory of his beloved horse, Hohoo Namjil made a musical instrument. From the abdomen skin, he made the front and back parts of the sound box of the instrument. He carved the head of his horse and decorated the upper part of the instrument. From his horse’s beautiful long tail, he made the strings and the bow. This legend is believed to tell the origins of the earliest leather-bodied Morin Huur.

Morin Huur has an intense sounding. A leather-bodied Morin Huur is believed to have a “saakhalt” sounding. In the Mongolian language, a “saakhalt” is a neighbor who lives in about 20-30 km away in the steppes. So, they would hear the sounding and know that a Morin Huur player visited the neighbor saying: “Sounds like a Morin Huur player is visiting Dorj’s family”. This is how people described the intensity of Morin Huur’s sounding.

Until 1970s, Morin Huur had a leather sound box. Then, a Mongolian master craftsman Jugder and Russian violin makers Erevan and Burin replaced leather with wood. This is how a wood-bodied Morin Huur used nowadays was born. Wooden bodied morin khuur was more resistant to humid weather than original natural leather morin khuur, so can be used long outside Mongolia. Leather-bodied Morin Khuurs are very rare. Only from time to time, masters make them. A leather-bodied Morin Huur has a richer sounding than an ordinary Morin Khuur made from wood. However, leather-bodied instruments are very fragile. They do not stand even the slightest humidity. To the preserve and increase the resistance of leather, numerous techniques are being experimented with.

Morin Huur’s sounding has a wide range from the lowest octave up to sol. In other words, Morin Huur reads three octaves. Morin Huur can play any European music with two strings and this is its uniqueness. European instruments have usually four strings, which are played one by one, while Morin Huur’s two strings are played together.

There is no other musical instrument sounding like Morin Huur. Because of such uniqueness, Morin Huur was registered in the UNESCO’s cultural heritage fund.

A learner who starts to learn to play Morin Huur, first, learns the hand pressure skills. Then, the learner learns how to to retrieve sounds. The learning process involves a series of pressure and sound retrieving exercises.

During the times of Chinggis Khaan, there was a Morin Huur orchestra supplemented by other musical instruments as “yochin”, “yatga”, “limbe”, “Ikh Huur” (or Grand Morin Huur) and shanz. This is a classical collection of instruments still used in the modern national orchestra. Ikh Khuur or Grand Morin Khuur is a bigger version of Morin Khuur, which plays the role of the double bass.

Limbe

“Limbe” or flute is also believed to have a Mongolian origin. Originally, a flute was made out of feather grass and had both ends open. Then, one end was blocked and holes were made along the body of the instrument.

Huuchir and Yatga

“Huuchir” is one of the classical instruments in the national orchestra. It has a Chinese origin. “Yatga” is an instrument which originally came from Korea. One of the Mongolian kings is believed to have brought this instruments from these countries.

Now, they all have been mongolized and the instruments played in the modern orchestra are the Mongolian prototypes of these original instruments.

About our Maker

Few books have been written about the Mongolian musical instruments. Some can be found at Egshiglen, a store selling national musical instruments. Today, the most prominent maker of musical instruments, especially Morin Khuur, is Mr. Baigaljav.

He is considered the No. 1 among makers. From manual making one by one production, his workshop has grown into a group of skilled craftsmen capable to produce 100 Morin Huurs in one order.

Mongolian traditional songs and dance

Khoomii

“Khoomii” or Throat Singing is a specific way of singing which originates from the replication of natural sounds as the babbling of stream, the echoing of mountain rock or the reeling of thunder. By listening to these sounds, man tried to replicate them by forcing his throat and tongue to retrieve such sounds. First, these sounds resembled more whistling than throat sounds. By applying more force on the throat, these whistling sounds were refined into deep sounds coming from inside of the throat. By applying different vibrations of the tongue, the deep throat sounds are transformed into many sounds resembling, for instance, the babbling of a stream. So, Khoomii is believed to have originated from the natural forces of the earth.

Hovd, Altai mountain region in west of Mongolia, is believed to be the motherland of Khoomii. The famous Khoomii singer Sundui Jajaa was born in Chandmani Soum of Hovd Aimag. There are also different varieties of Khoomii singing such as chest Khoomii, stomach Khoomii, palate Khoomii, nose Khoomii. These are all different separate techniques of Khoomii singing. There four famous Khoomii singers in Mongolia: Sundui Jajaa, Tserendorj, Ganbold and Odsuren. These four singers are considered to be the most skillful and prominent Khoomii singers. They are all from Hovd Aimag. Khoomii singer Ganbold was the sound operator who made the Khoomii backgrounds for the well-known Mongolian epic movies Chinggis Khaan and Queen Manduhai.

Mongolian Traditional Dance

There isn’t just a Mongolian dance. The origins of all Mongolian dances go back to the traditional nomadic lifestyle of Mongols as kneading the flour, processing the skins and hides, shooting bows or herding livestock. The two distinctive movements in the Mongolian traditional dance are called “bielgee” (various shoulder movements) and “tatlaga” (quick pulling movements with arms). The European dances also originate from lifestyle events; however, they are artistic representations while the Mongolian dances are literally physical replications.

Mongolian Long Song

The origins of Mongolian long songs lie in the endless Mongolian steppes. And like their origins, the most famous Mongolian long songs praise the beauty of the Mongolian steppes. A Mongolian long song is unique to Mongolia. No similar technique exists in other countries where the singer applies various tints, beats and pulsations to his or her voice throwing it up and down. Foreign singers do not have these techniques. Occasionally, some modern singers in world apply similar but very basic techniques in their singing. However, these uses never go beyond the basics because the Mongolian school of long song is very specific. Mongolian traditional songs are all folk songs without a specific author.

There are several folk music and dance ensembles in Mongolia. The most well-known among them are Tumen Ekh, Jamuuhai, Domog, Altan Urga, Khan Huur.

This category offers the finest collection of Kazakh handmade products that represent the centuries old rich cultural heritage of Western Mongolia. Most of the items are made by household or women-led businesses.

e-Mongol is proud to support such small-scale artisans who have inherited the rich experience of traditional Kazakh handcraft art but have not had access to any marketplace in the world to market and publicize their unique skills.

Kazakh products offered for sale in our shop embody the spirit of Bayan-Ulgii, the homeland of Mongolian Kazakhs and the most western aimag (province) of Mongolia, known for its landscape beauties, eagle hunting and traditional embroidery.

The capital town Ulgii is considered the most continental place in the world located at the altitude of 2500 m above sea level.

The Kazakh make and designs capture the essence of the beautiful landscapes of Altai Mountains that dominate most parts of this province. Traditional bright embroidery used in Kazakh clothing, accessories and tapestry reflect the myriad colors of steppes and mountains during short but vibrant summers while the warm materials such as felt, cotton and wool imply the rigorous and unpredictable nature of this land.

Kazakh women are famous for their fine needlecraft which requires a lot of patience, dedication, care and talent. The traditional embroidery is done by a variety of different stitches, the most popular of which is the “loop stitch” that is made by pulling the thread around the needle and forming a chain of tightly interconnected loops.

Embroideries represent a combination of stylized patterns, symbolizing love, marriage, childbirth, prosperity and sometimes politics and religion, and natural patterns featuring river waves, mountain peaks, wild flowers and animals.
Kazakh clothing and tapestry reflect the nomadic lifestyle.

“Tuskgiigz” is a wall hanging inside the ger that can also be used as rug or bedspread. Kazakh women sew these wall hangings by hand. A young, newly married woman decorates her ger over the years of marriage with these colorful, vivid wall hangings. The circles in the inset commemorate the marriage and coming of their children.

The kazakhs kept their religion, Islam, and claim that on some patterns may be seen as koranic symbols.

Mongol garments

The Mongolian national garments and the dress code embody the way of life in the Land of Blue Skies. Mongolian clothes suit the many different occasions of nomadic life: be it horse riding, staying for overnight in the steppes or parading during national celebrations. For this reason, they have a simple and comfortable cut and, generally, a loose fit for easy wearing.

Mongolian national dress displays a variety of styles, designs, fabrics, colors and ornaments depending on the age, marital status, nationality and climate. As the nickname of the country implies, the favorite color in Mongolian clothes is blue in its different variations. The costumes of elderly people are made of modest and plain fabric while young people wear brighter colors. The attire of married women has more decorations than that of girls. Men’s clothes have more conservative colors, patterns and trimmings than women’s costumes.

The fabrics used in Mongolian clothing such as silk, brocade, satin and velour reveal a connection of the Mongolian culture with other oriental cultures. Due to harsh nature, the lining for the winter dress consists of sheepskin, goatskin, or fur of wolves, lynxes, foxes, and sables.

Patterns, trimmings and colors of Mongolian dress have a lot of symbolism. They symbolizes the human qualities essential for living in the steppes such as simplicity, strength, prosperity, longevity, happiness and family values or represent Nature: sun or moon.

You will find below definitions and meanings of different garments and patterns that will help you browse through the collection in an informed way.

Deel is a long traditional outer dress with a high collar and an open asymmetrical overlapping front that has buttons below the right shoulder, under the right arm and on the right thigh. Deel is usually cut as one piece and has a simple design that fits loose and is comfortable for mounting and riding on horse. A long fabric made of light flexible silk is worn with Deel as belt. Some men’s Deel have “nudarga” or a large trimming attached to the end of sleeves that can be overturned.

There are seasonal varieties of Deel. A winter deel has a sheep skin lining. A demi-seasonal deel worn in spring and autumn has a warm padded lining. Summer deels are light and are lined with only light smooth fabric such as satin.

Deels are embroidered with trimming along the collar and edges usually made of silk. Sometimes deels have double trimmings. Deels also differ depending on the occasion for which they are worn. A ceremonial deel is usually made of a bright color fabric and is richly decorated with trimmings made of golden or silver silk.

Khantaaz is a traditional jacket which can similar to Deel but shorter. It is usually worn outside of Deel. Is is usually made of thick warm fabrics. Khantaaz also has beautiful decorative trimmings.

Janjin is a men’s hat with a pointed peak, symbolizing prosperity and happiness, which rests on a dome-shaped base and is directed upward toward the sky.

Toortsog is a round cap that is usually worn by women during a warm season.

Lovuuz is a winter hat cut as two rectangular shapes sewn together with an opening at the back that is tied with little ribbons. It is trimmed of fox skin or other animals skin.

About Mongolian camels

Mongolian camels are one of the most precious species of the Gobi desert. Camels are used for transportation, milk, wool and meat by nomadic people. Camels can travel a long distance without food and drink, which gives good support for nomads to survive in an extremely harsh climate.

Usually a camel drinks 50 – 100 liters (13 – 26 gallon)* of water once in every 2 days. It can survive easily 6-7 days without water.

People provide water to camel from water wells. During summer, camels also drink water from pools established after rains.

In winter, camels eat snow instead of drinking. It can also stay without food 7-8 days.

Theoretically, camel can survive up to 60 days without food.

In a long distance caravan, each camel carries about 200 kg (440 lb) of luggage. In short distance moves, one camel can carry 300 – 400kg (660 – 880 lb) of luggage. For the camelback riding, camel can go about 100 km (60 miles) per day without stops and rests.

Camels are very calm animal. It rarely attacks people or other animals. However, male camels get extremely aggressive during the mating season. Camels start mating when the temperature gets at its peak cold. Mating continues about 2 months from the beginning of January to the beginning of April.

The colder is the temperature, the more extensive is the mating. Female camels usually give birth to a single baby after 360 days of pregnancy around the end of February or the beginning of April. It feeds its baby during the next 360 days.

So, camels give birth once in 2 years. On the huge spaces of the Gobi desert, camels freely graze on hundreds of square miles. It survives temperature variations from + 45°C (+113°F) hot during summer and – 45°C (-49°F) cold during winter.

In such an extreme climate, camels often face situations when no food and drink is available for days. Camels like to eat leaves of Gobi trees and shrubs.

Nomads milk camel twice a day and in each milking a camel gives about 0.5 to 1.5 liters (2 – 6 cup) of milk. This way a camel herd provides nutritious milk all year round. Nomadic people make from camel milk a milk tea, milk drink, fermented milk drink, milk vodka, yoghurt and dried hard curds. One camel gives about 5 to 10 kg (11 - 22 lb) of wool each year. A mature male camel weighs up to 450 kg (990 lb).

Camels live, on average, 18-20 years. There was a case when a camel lived 25 years. In 1954, Mongolia had 895.300 camels. The number of the camel population dropped to 254.200 in 2004.

Most of the decrease in the number of camels was due to killing for meat during the economic hardships in the country. Camel meat is sold in the urban areas for meat supply.

Although the government put a ban against such actions, an illegal sale of camel meat is still going on in capital city markets. Because of poverty, nomads continue to sell their camels to meat resellers for petty cash.

Therefore, promoting camel wool is important for protection of camels.

About Camel products and producers

Camel wool is obtained from the extremely warm fur from the basecoat of the camel. The finest and best quality wool is obtained from the Bactrian yearlings with a fiber diameter of 16-18 microns. Because of the beauty of the color, products made of camel wool are usually left in the natural camel color or dyed a darker brown.

Camel wool is lightweight and smooth. Its unique properties allow shaping and tailoring, making the camel wool the most popular fabric for tailoring fine garments. Camel wool has recently experienced a renaissance in the world market and textile industry.

Camel herds provide a source of living for Gobi’s nomadic households who depend on camels for most part of their incomes. Due to the limited number of camels and scarcity of camel wool supplies, it is regarded, along with cashmere, as an exclusive natural fiber and is used in the textile industry as a luxury material.

Finished camel wool products provide the warmest insulating qualities while also being the softest among other natural wool.

Transforming camel wool into final products is a sophisticated process requiring time and skill. Camel wool is collected by camel herders by combing the animal by hand during the spring molting season. La veste est superbe, je la porte sur mon pull depuis que je l'ai déballée car il ne fait pas chaud aujourd'hui, ça tombe bien, les couleurs sont superbes : le mélange de ce vert émeraude et motifs dorés est heureux.
La finition est impeccable, la doublure donne envie de la porter à l'envers... je suis très contente d'avoir acheté cet article.

Mongolia is the world’s second largest producer of cashmere accounting for over 30 percent of world supply.

Most of the production of natural fiber is exported mainly to China but also India and Nepal.

The world’s finest cashmere is produced by rare cashmere goats bred on the high, dry and cool mountainous plateaus of western and southwestern Mongolia. To survive in this rigorous climate, goats develop beneath their coarse outer hair a layer of downy, fine and soft fiber that is what is called cashmere. The colder and crispier the air is the more resilient the goats become and the warmer and fluffier the layer grows to be to insulate the animals from the bitter cold and strong winds. That is why Mongolian cashmere is famous and known worldwide for its exceptional warmth, softness, lightness and, at the same time, durability.

Cashmere goats provide a source of living for Mongolia’s nomadic households who depend on goat herding for most part of their income.

It takes four-five years for a goat to grow enough cashmere for a sweater.

Therefore, transforming cashmere fibers into final products is a sophisticated process requiring extraordinary time and skill.

Cashmere fibers are collected by combing the animal by hand during the spring molting season.

Then, cashmere undergoes other stages of processing such as sorting, scouring, dehairing, spinning, weaving or knitting before it becomes a gorgeous sweater or jacket that you will enjoy for many years.

Owing to the finite number of goats, cashmere supplies are very limited. Due to the scarcity of cashmere and its inherent properties being slender, elastic, glossy and tensile, it is regarded as an “up-market” material and is used in the textile industry as a luxury fiber.
